The Space
Ananda is a refined hospitality space envisioned as a celebration of authentic regional Gujarati cuisine, experienced through an atmosphere of quiet luxury and cultural continuity. Rooted in warmth, craftsmanship, and tradition, the restaurant draws its architectural inspiration from Ahmedabad’s historic pol houses and heritage havelis, reinterpreting their spatial language within a contemporary dining environment.
The interiors evoke the essence of traditional pol living through the thoughtful integration of reclaimed architectural and decorative elements sourced from heritage homes. Central chowks (courtyards) anchor the spatial experience, while intricately carved parnals (roof fascia) and indigenous craft techniques lend depth and authenticity to the space. The restaurant is conceived as a destination for slow dining—where ambience, comfort, and cultural storytelling are as integral as the cuisine itself.
The Ask
The brief was to design a hospitality environment that honours Gujarati heritage without appearing nostalgic or ornamental. The client envisioned a space that reflects regional identity through craftsmanship, materials, and art—while maintaining a contemporary, elegant sensibility. The restaurant needed to cater to all age groups, balance grandeur with intimacy, and create a calm, immersive dining experience suitable for both everyday meals and celebratory occasions.
Spatial planning was key, with a requirement for layered seating zones, visual privacy, smooth circulation, and a dedicated Private Dining Room that feels exclusive yet cohesive with the overall design language.
The Result
The final design weaves multiple expressions of Gujarati art and architecture into a unified, understated narrative. Indigenous craft forms such as lippan wall finishes and tikri mirror work—both native to the region—are revived with sensitivity and restraint, becoming integral to the spatial experience rather than surface decoration. Traditional Mata ni Pachedi artworks are incorporated as cultural markers, enriching the interiors with layered storytelling and symbolic depth.
The restaurant layout is meticulously planned to accommodate 100–110 guests through a series of intimate seating pockets that maintain openness and continuity. A dedicated Private Dining Room for 20–25 guests is designed as a refined enclave, ideal for celebrations and special gatherings.
A luxurious yet composed ambience is achieved through a careful interplay of materials, textures, bespoke furniture, lighting moods, and a restrained colour palette. Regional references are subtly embedded throughout the space, reinforcing cultural identity without overpowering the experience.
Ananda emerges as a serene and immersive hospitality destination—where heritage, craftsmanship, and refined dining converge seamlessly, offering an experience that lingers well beyond the meal.
