The Space
Located in the heart of old Ahmedabad city, this Irani Café is a living legacy that dates back to 1938. Known for its iconic Irani chai and maska bun, the café has long attracted locals and tourists alike. Deeply rooted in pre-independence history, the space represents generations of Irani culture carefully preserved by the owners, who have proudly carried forward its vintage essence for decades.
The Ask
The biggest challenge was to revive and refresh the café without disturbing its historic soul. The brief demanded a sensitive balance—honouring Irani heritage while making the space relevant for today’s diverse audience. With affordable pricing and a loyal customer base spanning all economic segments, the design needed to feel inclusive, nostalgic, and authentic rather than curated or upscale. The intent was to begin from the roots and let history guide every design decision.
The Result
The final design is a seamless blend of nostalgia and renewal. The façade adopts a fresh colour palette while retaining the unmistakable charm of a 1930s bakery, instantly evoking familiarity and warmth. Inside, seating areas feature retro-inspired arched windows reimagined with contemporary colours, paired with tables and benches detailed in Persian patterns.
Arched vaults on the ceiling echo the architecture of colonial-era heritage buildings, grounding the space in its historical context. A defining feature of the café is the entrance wall stacked with cookie and biscuit jars—a quintessential Irani café element that instantly transports visitors back in time. Exposed brick surfaces lend a heritage feel, while white finishes reflect natural light, keeping the interiors bright and welcoming. Subtle mirrors placed behind the arches enhance light and ambience, completing a space that feels timeless.
